Sicilian Oven….Wood Fired and Good To Go!

DiSalvos Pizza….. Y’all remember that place? Well, this restaurant  was reborn into Sicilian Oven maybe five or six years ago. Ralph DiSalvo still owns it with Andrew Garavuso and it was rebranded/remodeled into this sharp looking restaurant. I wrote about this place on Yelp years ago. I kinda busted their balls about a few things which I’m not going to rehash…Not that they were bad or anything, but they did address the minor issues I brought up.

I’m not a regular here and there is no particular reason why I’m not. The service and food have always been good. My issue is time and money management LOL. I can’t be everywhere and I don’t have unlimited funds to use to eat and drink out.

Why am I here? Simple, a friend was talking to me about a great restaurant in Coral Springs and said, “Sicilian Oven”. I replied, yes, it is very good and one of owners Ralph DiSalvo, is a really nice guy. When asked when was the last time I was there, I was embarrassed to say that it had been awhile. This put me on a mission to come here to pay my respects and write a review. First thing I do is go on the website to see if anything has changed etc… Well the website is bad ass! What I love about it is the Videos they post. The segments called “Chef for a Day” are fun to watch especially if you love food. I highly recommend you check them out.

Food and More

Food Specials on Happy Hour

Food Specials on Happy Hour

Happy hour is 1 buck off beers ( no draft here) and 1 buck off the 7 buck wine and 2 bucks off the 9 buck wine. The Happy Hour bar bite menu is 3 buck Rice ball, 4 buck Truffle Fries, Wings (8) 5 bucks and a Meatball is 5 bucks too.

Gina, our server,  is extremely knowledgeable about the menu. I like to test the servers by asking what they recommend and always follow up by asking why. She knew her $hit. She raved about the chicken parmesan but I already had my mind made up on where my culinary journey was going. Make no mistake, I appreciated Gina’s input.

Truffle Parm Fries

Truffle Parm Fries

We started off with the wings, truffle fries, and meatball on happy hour. The wings are oven roasted with caramelized onions. It’s an exact clone of what Anthony’s Coal Fire Pizza pumps out, but here is where they go in different directions…coal vs wood. The wood roasting gave the wings a better flavor. Not that Anthony’s sucks, because they don’t, it’s a matter of preference. If you are into Buffalo style wings, these are not the wings for you. These wings are more high class because of the preparation and the addition of the onions and seasonings. The flavors just work fantastic together. Next up, truffle fries…nothing is more earthy than truffles or truffle oil. When you take potatoes, which grow below the dirt, add truffle oil, salt and parmesan regganio you are going to have one tasty dish. The fries are thin cut with nice shavings of parm mixed throughout. Lastly, the meatball….it was a very nice size. I like my balls BIG! (Childish boy humor LOL). The sauce (I’m not Italian so I don’t use the word gravy) was money! The masterpiece was the meatball…My father and I loved it! You could tell this was a mix of ground meats which made this meatball, moist and flavorful.

The Mother of All Balls:)

The Mother of All Balls:)

For our main course we got The Boss pie which is fresh mozzarella, fresh basil, and tomato sauce and I added mushrooms. My wife got Sicilian Bruschetta and she loved it. The pizza was really good, man. Nothing like fresh mozzarella, mushrooms and basil on a pie. Again, I really liked the sauce because didn’t over power the pizza. So many places over due it with the oregano and garlic it’s just kills the balance. This pie was done right and the wood oven just takes it to another level. No conveyor belt pizza here, this $hit is done the old fashioned way. Excellent!

Ambiance

Good looking restaurant and very clean. The men’s bathroom was spotless which is a huge gauge I use when checking out the cleanliness of a restaurant. It’s not a huge place with a bar area, some high tops and a dining room. It has a good flow to it with some nice TVs mounted on a few walls. Plus, I just love the colors inside…. it’s warm and inviting.

Verdict

Overall, this joint is excellent and gets…….wait for it…….. 4 BEERS! Great job by our server Gina and the staff/management. Remember to tell them Dan I Cook sent you and Stay Hungry!

Four beers = Outstanding
Three beers = Good
Two beers = OK
One beer = Needs work
Zero beers= Sucks (No beer is never a good thing.)

Hello Dan, my wife and I are also fans of Gina. Being her parents has been an honor and a privilege. We also know most of the people working there, the management and the owners. We hear from Gina that they are great people to work with and for. Both my wife and myself are from Italian decent, so we know a thing or two how Italian food should be prepared and taste. We are of course biased to our daughter, but not when it comes to the Italian restaurant she works at. So when we say that it is if not the best, The Sicilian Oven is definitely one of the best Italian restaurants we have in Coral Springs or anywhere else we have eaten. We eat there at least once a week, and always, always have had a great meal. Never disappointed. We see you feel the same way. The food is almost as great as our daughter Gina.
