I went to Phat Boys Sushi in Coral Springs with a group of friends. I normally avoid newly opened places but my it was my buddy and Dan I Cook Food Agent David Lesser’s birthday. He and his wife Samantha Lesser another Dan I Cook Food Agent 💪🏽 wanted to check it out along with their happy hour.
The ambiance was hip and nicely decorated. It has a nice open feel with lots of natural light shining in. All Rona Rules were followed. let me discuss this for a second… I can’t wait until these rona rules are gone. I like to see people’s faces especially my servers. When they talk to me I pay attention. When I ask them questions I pay attention. It’s hard to get a good read on folks when I can’t see their whole face. Plus I’ve never and I mean never had a server sneeze or cough in my face. I’m getting tired of these Rona Rules and 50% capacity crap that is killing businesses. Just so everyone knows, I have preexisting medical conditions that if I catch the Rona I could be a gonner. I have a choice, stay home or live my life. I choose to live my life man. end of rant.
The service was excellent. Why? Because they are trained if they walk by even if it’s not their table to empty dishes etc… the only place I see this done is at Houston’s. Our drinks were always full and everyone was very friendly.
We had a tuna app that was exactly like a poke’. Being half Samoan I’m fully aware of what great poke’ is. This was pretty damn delicious. The owner John made it for us and you could tell it was not sitting around in a tub of soy sauce and sesame seed oil. The star of the show is supposed to be the tuna and it was. Nice chucks of it with just a light toss of soy sauce and sesame seed oil. We also had the salmon belly. Now if you don’t make this right it could be horrible. It is what the name says it is. This is made from the part of the salmon that holds all the guts to the fish. So let that thought sink in 😂 I would say Hamachi Sushi and Thai in Coral Springs makes this dish the best but I was impressed with Phat Boys. The salmon had a great butter taste with the addition of grilled flavor from being torched on top.
Happy Hour Drink specials are wonderful. Half off all drinks and draft beers from 5p to 7p. I got some Sapporo beers and tried their signature Gin drink that is muddled with lime and mint leaves. This was outstanding. It wasn’t tart at all and they didn’t add any sugar to it. very refreshing cocktail and I highly recommend this. Rumor is they will be having a Happy Hour Bar Bite menu coming out soon so I’ll be looking forward to that.
Verdict
For the record I ordered take out from this joint a couple of days after they opened and I was not impressed. The rolls were small and so was the nigri. I told this to the owner’s face while I was there. My experience at the restaurant was way better. Just goes to show you take out blows and places like this you need to dine in to get the full cool vibe. I see this place being very successful in Coral Springs. with addition of Tap 42, and Runyons being renovated, Coral Springs is finally becoming a hip place for the younger folks to enjoy instead of traveling east or to Boca or even Delray. Good job Phat Boys and I can’t wait to sit at your sushi bar and become a regular👍🏼 Stay Hungry!
