Dan I Cook’s Hidden Treasures: Gabose Pocha’s Chicken Wings.
This is a Korean Club/Pub which is the little brother of Gabose Korean restaurant. I’ve been to Gabose but never to Pocha or, as I’m going to call it, “GP”. I’ve been a big fan of Gabose way before they blew up in popularity. The owners Fred and Susan are the nicest folks around. I’m so proud of the both of them and their families because they deserve all the praise they receive. Ok, enough with me kissing their ass…LOL.
Besides being a cool hip Karoke bar with artistic drinks, GP serves food that is very different but crazy good. I am going to just type about my hidden treasure, THE GP’s CHICKEN WINGS! These chicken wings are some of the best I’ve ever had. The best chicken wings in Broward are at Calypso Pub in Pompano Beach, FLA., but GP has a chance to unseat Calypso for the best wings. Here is why. Michael Mayo take notes, sir (LOL)… size of a wing is paramount, flavor, and crispness. Gabose Pocha has all three! These wings are the crispest wings I’ve ever had, no joke. I thought for sure they use corn starch to make them so crispy but owner Susan says they don’t. You can get the wings different ways but buffalo style isn’t one of them….thank god! When I come to Gabose I want flavors…new flavors! My favorite flavor is the Pocha Original hot with sesame seeds…It has a teriyaki style flavor. Just so you know, Korean hot is not normal hot and Korean spicy is not your normal spicy. This $hit is spicy, man! If you have ever had their spicy ribs (and I have), they are scorching hot. I could only have 2 ribs before I said, no mas! Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Now the “hot” wings are nothing like the “spicy” ribs. They are mild and easy to eat. When you bite into the wings you get a nice full crunch. The only thing I can compare them to is biting into an extra crispy piece of KFC with way more flavor and no grease. You have to take a leap of faith and try them.
Ambiance
Small, inviting, and intimate. Nothing stuffy about GP. There is a large communal table in the center, a small bar and several tables scattered about. There is a TV over the bar where they play the Karoke Songs. Opposite the bar is the small open kitchen. In front of the server station is a fish tank that houses live octopus, abalone, and other seafood that you order to eat. This is the perfect place to bring a group of people to sing, eat, drink and have some laughs. Best part about the Karoke is you don’t have to stand in front of everyone to sing. They have two wireless mics and they bring them right to your table. They also have two tambourines that light up when you strike them. They have many songs to choose from and when we were there everyone was having a great time. The vibe is lively and positive, especially when GP is full.
Verdict
I didn’t even talk about the cool Soju ( Korean Saki) they serve. I’ll let you discover that on your own. I will add they only serve beer, wine, and Soju… no liquor. As a hidden treasure, GP’s chicken wings are 4 large Hite Beers! Remember to tell them Dan I Cook sent you and Stay Hungry!
Four beers = Outstanding
Three beers = Good
Two beers = OK
One beer = Needs work
Zero beers= Sucks (No beer is never a good thing.)
