Broward Health Coral Springs Cafeteria AKA Star-Lite Cafe…..Really Sucks!

My father has been admitted to the hospital twice in less than a week. He is currently at Broward Health Coral Springs and I will say the medical staff and employees are top notch. Unfortunately, I’m not reviewing them:(

If you follow my reviews you know I compare apples to apples. I’m not going to compare this cafeteria with a Runyons or even Golden Corral. Why? These cafeterias are not destination locations. You come here when someone is in the hospital…duh. I will say I have some experience dining in hospital cafeterias. My mom was in multiple hospitals during her three year fight with that bull$hit cancer. That was over five years ago when she lost that fight and I really haven’t been to a hospital cafeteria since. Back then I was really impressed with the Cafeteria at Holy Cross Hospital and a Cafe they had there. I think the name is Healthy Heart Cafe. They prepared some fresh delicious chow. I also ate at the cafeteria at FAU when my son lived on campus and that was damn good, too. The options were incredible and it was all you could eat.

The Food

I went for breakfast and it’s all self serve. They have a grill but it was closed. They had some fresh fruit with yogurt and a hot Buffet with hard boiled eggs, scrambled eggs, home fries O’brian style, fried hash browns, bacon, sausage links, sausage patties (unknown what type no sign above food)  corned beef and hash, I think French toast (no sign above the food) and biscuits. They had some large muffins on a separate table and oatmeal. They also had plastic wrapped bagels on a shelf near the cash register…You toast them yourself. Honestly, nothing looked appetizing but I was hungry as hell.

My breakfast

My breakfast

I had a plate of the following: some bacon, two turkey sausages, a scoop of home fries, a scoop of corn beef and hash, a plain bagel, and some small containers of creamed cheese. It cost 7 bucks and change with a bottled water. I was going to get a biscuit, but when I picked it up with the tongs it felt hard as rock from sitting under the heat lamp…No biscuit for me.

This bacon was not cooked enough for me. Can't believe I grabbed it.

I toasted my bagel and took my food to my pop’s room. Man the food was horrible. The corn beef and hash had to be canned. It was salty as $hit. The hash-browns were barely warm and some of the bacon was not cooked thoroughly for me. The bagel was like something you would get from 7-11. The turkey sausage was ok….Overall the food SUCKED and I didn’t even eat half of it before I threw it away.

Ambiance

Lets face it, hospitals are not happy places unless someone in your family or a friend is having a baby. The space is not inviting at all and it felt like you were eating in depressing area. At least the walls were a beige color and not plain white. They have an outdoor sitting area, but I didn’t check it out. I’m not an interior decorator but maybe some plants, some art, and some cool seating would be a start.

No one was staffing the food line and I had to check with someone who looked liked they worked there to ask if the sausage patties were pork or what. Not sure if the employees wear uniforms, I couldn’t tell. If they are not going to have someone behind the food line they should at least have a sign saying what the food is. Why the grill wasn’t opened was beyond me. Maybe some fresh pancakes, eggs, omelette, or a Belgium waffle would be a huge step for a fresh positive vibe. It didn’t make sense why it wasn’t open. That’s bull$hit.

Verdict

Whoever runs the food service there should be ashamed of themselves. That hospital is one of the best in county. I know there are some fantastic employees there from the custodial crew all the way to the doctors. To serve them this crappy breakfast food is a slap in their face. Mind you, I am not friends with anyone who works here. But if I had to work a 12.5 hour shift and couldn’t leave the facility I would be pissed to have to eat there. Hey maybe lunch and dinner are better I don’t know. I do know breakfast sucks. Can’t recommend this one.

Originally I gave this place ZERO beers but on 05/04/16 I met a cafeteria employee named Darrell who was very helpful to me. He got me two empty food containers for the crawfish The Cook and Cork gave me. Of course,  my dad couldn’t eat all those crawfish pictured below and I wouldn’t allow him either. I gave one plate to my dad’s nurse Alicia and the other to Summer, my LA Woman who works in Guest Relations. Darrell who is a Miami Dolphan Fan was freaking awesome because when I went to the cafeteria it was closed. This young man jumped up and offered to assist me. Great job by him so I raised my review to 1 Beer.

Stay hungry!

Four beers = Outstanding
Three beers = Good
Two beers = OK
One beer = Needs work
Zero beers= Sucks (No beer is never a good thing.)
